Our Story – A Business 20 years in the Making

Two decades ago a pair of Mt. Pleasant boys balanced two 5-gallon buckets on their handlebars and turned their bikes up Pitt Street towards home. Those buckets were filled to the brim with freshly-caught white shrimp and a dozen or so rustling blue crabs. “Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could do this every day?” One of the boys said. “I have a feeling that someday we will.” The other answered. Twenty years, two separate careers, and about a thousand crab pickings later that feeling became a reality as Lowcountry Oyster Co. was born.

#EATLowco Oysters

We are going to come right out and say it: the waters of South Carolina’s ACE basin produce some of the most delicious oysters On. The. Planet. And we aren’t just talking blades and clusters here (those are delicious too though). What we are talking about are single, select oysters that spent their whole lives preparing for their big moment on a bed of ice in front of you.

So if South Carolina produces such great oysters then why are more than 80% of the oysters found in South Carolina raw bars sourced from out of state? Simple: Availability.

Up until about 2016, there simply weren’t any oyster farms in South Carolina growing oysters like the rest of the great oyster regions in the United States. Lowco, along with a handful of other awesome local farms, is changing that.

You can help support the South Carolina oyster by supporting our local farms as you belly up to the raw bar.
